MODEL IST
PROJECT. The rational of the project is: (1) to identify
factors which enable and constrain the capture, structure and diffusion of
knowledge across the organization and over time, (2) to develop an
organizational methodology which facilitates the capture of both explicit
and tacit knowledge, (3) to develop software applications which can store
and structure the captured knowledge, (4) to develop a learning platform
(including methodological guidelines and S/W applications) which nurtures
at both individual and organizational levels the knowing capacity i.e. the
capacity to enact skills which are associated with putting knowledge into
practice, (5) to test the
system in a real-life organizational environment through action research
with private companies and academic operators specialised in executives
training. Web

GEM (GLOBAL
E-COMMERCE MASTER). The GEM consortium (Global Master in
Electronic Commerce- http://www.heltrun.aueb.gr/gem) is an international
network of business schools sharing a common curriculum in e-commerce at
the master’s degree level. The program has received the endorsement of
the European Commission and G7’s Information Technology group. The
founding members of the GEM consortium include: (1) Athens University of
Technology and Business, Greece, (2) Copenhagen Business School,
Copenhagen, Denmark, (3) Erasmus University, Rotterdam School of
Management / Faculty of Business, The Netherlands, (4) Georgia State
University, Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America, (5) Norwegian
School of Economics and Business Administration, Bergen, Norway, (6)
University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany The
development of an e-learning facility was considered from the members of
the consortium as a vital process of the whole master program. For this
reason there was an extensive research on the capabilities of the
integrated platforms to support the whole approach. Finally the consortium
decided to use the Blackboard as the technological infrastructure for the
development of distance courses. The Athens University of Economics and
Business undertook to develop the e-technology course for e-commerce
master program (http:// www.eltrun.aueb.gr/gem/new

EPET AMEA. The
objectives of the project were to promote tele-working and tele-training
methods in the area of people with disabilities. For that reason it
resulted in the development of a virtual tele-working and distance
learning centre for disable people. In the context of this research, Mr.
Themistocleous published his 3rd book which is entitled
‘Telework for People with Disabilities’. The
book was adopted by the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology
(GSRT) and distributed to the organisations of people with disabilities in
Greece. |

ARISTOTELES. The objective of the project was to develop a pilot distance learning
system on behalf of the Greek Ministry of Education. Through this project
a new subject entitled ‘Internet and Distance Learning’ was proposed
by the research group and introduced in secondary schools. For the purpose of this subject, Mr. Themistocleous, Mr. Lytras and
Prof. Doukidis wrote a book, which was adopted by the Greek Pedagogical
Institute and the Ministry of Education and it is used as teaching book in
secondary schools. |

EPEAEK
DISLEACE. This
project aimed at the development of a distance-learning centre on behalf
of Athens University of Economics and Business. The centre provides 4 tele-courses on Electronic Commerce, Electronic
Marketing, Statistics and Advanced Methods of Training and it is currently
used by Athens University of Economics and Business. |

EPEAEK HEHO
(Educational Space Without Limits). HEHO project introduced a distance-learning network
that serves 3 universities in Greece (Athens University of Economics and
Business, University of Macedonia [Salonika] and Technical University of
Chania [Crete]). In this context a distance learning system was
established in each university, and 3 different subjects are provided
(Electronic Commerce and Business Processes, Health and safety and
Modelling business processes). The
distance learning environment supports a joined master established by the
aforementioned universities. |

CERTIFICATION. HEHO and CERTIFICATION were sub- projects of an integrated proposal
for the development of a distance learning environment to support the
teaching processes of 3 universities in Greece (Athens University of
Economics and Business, University of Macedonia [Salonika] and Technical
University of Chania [Crete]. In this context, the aim of CERTIFICATION
project was to certify the teaching processes over distance learning
systems. For that reason, the participants of this project collaborated
with British Bodies (e.g. Pitman) that certify training. The output of CERTIFICATION project was the development of a
certification process for distance learning environments, which was
adopted and used by the participants. |

1998
– 2000 |
ADAPT
KALABRYTA. The
objective of the project was to develop a number of advanced electronic
commerce applications, which resulted in the development of an integrated
innovative system. The system was implemented for the region of Kalabryta
in Greece and attempted to promote and support the companies of the region
using electronic commerce technologies (e.g. electronic stores). In this
framework, a number of advanced applications were developed on a regional
base including: electronic stores, electronic tourism systems, web
advertising systems, integrated system for the ski centre which uses smart
cards to collect data and publish this data over internet, info-kiosks
that provide information and support hotel reservations etc. |
|
1998
- 2000 |
ADAPT
PEGASUS. PEGASUS
concerned the adaptation of working environments to the emerging market
trend for adoption of electronic trading facilities. The project aimed (a)
to the construction of a framework supporting business activities through
electronic commerce and trading services, (b) to the development of
mechanisms to facilitate the transition to electronic trading plate-forms
and finally to the study of the emerging problems and the development of a
model to predict the result of a possible massive admittance of electronic
trading practices by SMEs. |
|
1998
- 2000 |
ADAPT CRETE. The
focus of this project was on the reengineering of the business processes
and the adoption of Electronic Commerce solutions by a retail chain.
Moreover, the project aimed to the development of a telematic centre that
supports telework, distance learning and electronic communication. |
|
1999
– 2000 |
Road-show
activities for SMEs. In cooperation with the Greek Traders Federation, HELTRUN research
group started an electronic commerce road-show in 1997 to visit in 2 years
the majority of the 70 local traders association presenting them over 8
hours periods true electronic commerce applications and practical advice
on how to start with electronic commerce. |

The Multidimensional Dynamic E-learning Model
Our
research work is based on a number of hypotheses or theoretical foundations that
jointly formulate our scientific context of analysis:
H1:
Every e-learning system delivers value to the trainers as well as to the
teachers. If this hypothesis is true then all the available e-learning tools
could be positioned some where on a value grid with different value levels.
H2:
The value delivery of e-learning is based on specific value adding components,
which in general constitute a kind of a learning product.
H3:
The realization of the learning product requires the employment of specific
learning processes capable to reveal the components of the various e-learning
products.
H4:
The value of e-learning is maximized when dynamic characteristics are embedded
on e-learning solutions. The definition of these dynamic characteristics is of
high priority for our research efforts.
H4:
The value exploitation of e-learning products is directly related to specific
metadata capable to support an integrated metadata management mechanism.
H5:
The value dimension of e-learning is related directly to the knowledge
management capabilities of the employed e-learning system.
H6:
The value delivery of e-learning systems is related directly to its capability
to cooperate effectively with the critical business information systems within
an organization.
The
above hypotheses can be presented graphically, in order to have an overall view
of our recommendations. The main issue is the understanding that e-learning
courses preparation needs a multidisciplinary contribution in terms or
functionalities, pedagogy and knowledge management processes. The overall
objective of our approach is to justify scientifically the value adding
components of an e-learning mechanism that could support the knowledge
exploitation within a business organization or an academic setting. This
knowledge management approach to e-learning expands further the traditional
approach of static content on e-learning environments and investigates ways that
support dynamic value adding processes for e-learning systems.
Issues
such as reusability of learning objects, dynamic (re) construction of learning
modules, utilization of learning templates, and reinforcement of the capacities
for effective actions through the usage of the e-learning system are of critical
importance and represent crucial
milestones in our research approach.
